Sarah Wright – Director
Ms. Sarah Wright began playing viola in the sixth grade at Ross N Robinson Middle School in Kingsport, Tennessee. She is a 1996 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and is a past participant of the Tennessee All-State Orchestra and the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts. She was a student of Celia Bachelder. She received her Bachelors and Masters of Music Education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Her teaching career began in 2001 when she was hired to be an Itinerant Strings Teacher at 5 elementary schools in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2003 she became the Director of Orchestras at Hixson Middle School and Hixson High School where she taught until the spring of 2005. Ms. Wright moved to Indianapolis in 2005 and became the Director of Orchestras at Perry Meridian Middle School and Perry Meridian Sixth Grade Academy (2005-2014). While at Perry Meridian she used creative recruitment and retention concepts to lead orchestra enrollment in grades 6-8 to over 240 students. She was selected by her colleagues to be the Perry Meridian Academy Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009. She has also been the Director of Orchestras at Center Grove Middle School Central and Center Grove High School (2014-2015) as well as Lawrence Central High School (2015-2016). Middle and high school orchestras under Ms. Wright’s instruction received straight superior overall ratings for performances at the Indiana State School Music Association’s Concert Festival from 2005 through 2016.
Ms. Wright is currently the principal violist of the Palmetto Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Eclectica in Columbia, South Carolina. She has previously performed as a violist in the Carmel Symphony Orchestra (Carmel, Indiana), violist in the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, and bassist in the Chattanooga Concert Band. She has been a guest clinician for the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association’s Upper, Middle, and Lower area Junior Orchestra Clinics.
