Sky Haynie

My name is April Sky Haynie and I am the Firefighting Instructor here at Lexington Technology Center.  I was a career firefighter for 11 years with the Columbia Fire Department in Columbia,
SC.  I was also a Firefighting Instructor for both firefighter recruit programs and industry fire brigades for 8 years with the South Carolina Fire Academy.  I chose to leave the field of fire
fighting to pursue my passion for teaching.  Here at Lexington Technology Center I get the opportunity to teach young people to love firefighting as much as I do as well as help them to
gain industry certifications on their path to becoming firefighters.  I am certified by the South Carolina Fire Department to teach Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations, Firefighter 1,
Auto Extrication, and Firefighter 2 to my students.  I am also certified to teach both First Aid, CPR/AED and Emergency Medical Responder.  I received a BA from Columbia College in
Emergency Management in 2016.  I believe that my experience in the fire service is extremely helpful as I share firefighting strategies and techniques with my students.  I work to bring experts
into my classroom to speak with my students, and I take my students on field studies that will expose them to concepts that we learn about in the classroom.  I am passionate about student
involvement in their local Firefighter Explorer Program because it opens doors and gives students experience that will help them be successful in college and the workplace.
