The Lexington County School District One Educational Foundation was formed in 1994 as a 501(c)(3) organization to serve as a source of funds to support district programs and initiatives that are outside the scope of the district’s Annual Fund budget. The Educational Foundation is governed by a board of directors made up of district school board members, representatives from local businesses, civic organizations, the district superintendent, the district teacher of the year, and community citizens.

The first meeting of the newly formed Educational Foundation was held on September 17, 1995. James A. Compton, Michael S. Wingard, Michael V. Shealy, Dr. Lon Hamby, and Richard Hook were appointed as the founding members of the Board of Directors. Michael V. Shealy served as the first Educational Foundation board chairman.

Our board has grown from the original five members to the present group of more than 20 community leaders. The current Teacher of the Year automatically serves for one year. The board hired the first executive director in 2003 and this position continues to lead the Educational Foundation, along with its dedicated board members, the superintendent, district trustees and staff. The Educational Foundation Board of Directors meets throughout the school year and holds special meetings as deemed necessary.

Since its inception, the Educational Foundation has been a continuously growing and evolving support arm of the district. The alternative sources of funding generated through the Educational Foundation have focused on a variety of important initiatives, including grants for teachers and schools and amazing programs that enhance the quality of educational experiences for students in Lexington County School District One.

Most recently, the Foundation has supported literacy efforts through its Bucks for Books Grants and creative educational programs through its Innovation Grants for Elementary Schools. Annually, the Foundation honors the top graduating seniors through its Celebration of Excellence in Education banquet. Furthermore, our high school seniors have the opportunity to apply for numerous Foundation scholarships each year that were made possible by individuals who want to assist our students in their pursuit of future dreams. Help us strengthen educational opportunities for our students by investing in the Lexington One Educational Foundation.
